Here on the warm side of the Rockies, we’ve been having a beautiful winter. The sun is shining and outdoor adventures await in the Columbia Valley. If you’ve been itching to get some fresh mountain air in, look no further for inspiration.
Now is a great time for local residents to explore our backyard. With so many outdoor activities to keep you busy, why not try a new sport or venture down a new trail? To get you started, here are some of our top suggestions:
1. Explore Lake Lillian
Explore Lake Lillian, a small and charming lake just outside of Invermere.
The lake offers beautiful places to walk and sightsee.
When conditions allow, the lake is great for cross-country skiing and skating. Check for condition updates here.

2. Catch a Good Time
Ice fishing is a quintessential Canadian experience! Bring a picnic lunch and try your luck at catching your dinner.
Some great areas to explore are Lake Windermere, Lake Lillian and Whiteswan Lake.
Remember to purchase your British Columbia fishing license and carry it with you.
3. Find a Frozen Waterfall
The Lower Bugaboo Falls trail is a beautiful winter trail.
Accessed north of Radium Hot Springs from the town of Brisco, the trail is 3.5 k.m. roundtrip.
Make sure to utilize spikes or crampons to combat icy conditions and use caution while basking in the steep viewpoint.

4. Strap on the Skis
The Columbia Valley is a skiier’s paradise!
Whether you are a beginner or prefer carving out black diamond runs, you’ll find an adventure in the Columbia Valley.
5. Snowshoe in Kootenay National Park
Kootenay National Park is home to some great snowshoe opportunities!
The Dog Lake trail is the perfect oasis to venture down, offering views of the Rocky Mountains, Kootenay River and Dog Lake. Be sure to check trail conditions before you head out.

6. Day Trip to Nipika
Nipika Mountain Resort is a hidden gem only half an hour from the Columbia Valley!
Explore perfect terrain for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking. Head down seemingly endless trails and bring some hot chocolate in a thermos to warm up!
Bring your own gear or rent cross-country skis, snowshoes or fat bikes.
7. Soak in the Hot Springs Pools
Naturally heated water is the perfect way to soothe sore muscles after a day outside.
