Spring Hijinks

April 13, 2018

Break Out of Winter and into Adventure!

If thoughts of extinguishing your cabin fever have you kicking up your heels, come to the Columbia Valley. The lake is ice-free, hummingbirds are back, and sweet smells of the short but glorious Canadian spring hang in the air.

Valley businesses are ready to help you reconnect with warm outdoor fun. The world-class golf courses of the Columbia Valley Golf Trail are booking tee times as bighorn sheep vacate local fairways for birthing grounds higher up the mountains.

Wanting to get back on the water? Columbia River Paddle’s Outdoor Adventure Centre has stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and canoes to rent. With thousands of birds returning to the valley, paddling among nature’s songsters rejuvenates your city-stressed soul in a way few things can.

If you’re not sure where to paddle try a guided trip between Invermere and Radium and learn more about the wetlands for which the valley is famous. The lazy float between the two towns is a local favorite and suitable for beginners. Pack a lunch and pull up on of the sandy shores for some sunbathing along the way.

One of North America’s largest nature festivals Wings Over The Rockies energizes the valley from May 7 to 13. Over 100 events are on offer including hikes, river trips, evening talks, First Nation presentations, and coffee shop or distillery tours. It’s a great way to explore the valley as many landowners generously offer special access for festival events.

If one of the people wanting to take part in spring hijinks is a mom take in one of the many Mother’s Day brunches in the valley such as at Strand’s Old House Restaurant, Springs golf course or Copper Point Resort.

May you enjoy spring in the valley.
