Beaches and Mountains… the Best of Both Worlds

Summers in Canada are short but can be very, very sweet if you make the most of your time near the water in the Columbia Valley. Although the valley is known for beautiful mountain views it’s also blessed with great beaches.

Kinsmen Beach

The biggest beach is found at James Chabot Provincial Park on the north end of Windermere Lake where you can lay down your beach towel, launch your kayak, or enjoy a picnic. Check out the ospreys that nest near the parking lot each year. A little further into Invermere is Kinsmen Beach with family-friendly swimming and adult-friendly beverages across the tracks at The Station Neighborhood Pub.

Windermere Beach is popular with valley regulars but less well known. Parking is limited but with picnic tables, beach and children’s playground it’s another option for getting your beach vibe going. For a uniquely mountain experience stop at Lillian Lake on the road to Panorama Resort. This small lake is relatively shallow so it warms up enough for swimming by July and offers great mountain views. Look for the loons that also call the lake home.

Radium Hot Springs

Not a traditional beach but with plenty of admirers come summer is Fairmont Hot Springs Resort. The large lawn next to the public pools has chaise lounges and a view of the kids or grandkids (or their parents!) as they jump off the diving boards. Radium Hot Springs has a similar set up sans grass.

Whatever body of water you choose in the Columbia Valley your time spent relaxing near it will be easy.
